Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
––1 Peter 1:13-16
In a lot of the books and movies I love, there’s a type of scene that happens right after the moment when the hero of the story discovers his world is something other than he previously thought. It happens with Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, it happens with Neo in The Matrix, and it happens with Stephen Strange in Doctor Strange. Can you guess what I’m talking about?
It’s the training scene.
The function of the training scene is simple but absolutely indispensable: to take ordinary protagonists, and prepare them for action in their extraordinary worlds. Show Luke how to wield the force, Neo how to move in the matrix, Stephen Strange how to use a sling ring. Without the training scene, our heroes would flounder, and the plot would go nowhere…
…which is exactly what happens to Christians when they don’t train as disciples: their lives in Christ go grey, and they begin to feel like they aren’t all that different from the lives of those around them.
This is why I’m so looking forward to January, 2017. In the latter half of that month, Awaken will begin a 13-week course of training, based on The Disciples Path. The course begins with the basics, and is structured around a $6 workbook which participants will pay for and go through on their own each week. Then, during our 3pm prayer times, we’ll come together to solidify our learning, pray, and encourage each other.
Not only will this course train us to think and live like disciples of Jesus, but it’ll give us a platform to use in discipling others. So you can think of it as two things: something for being discipled yourself, and something that will help you in discipling others.
We want to do this together as an entire church, understanding that really following Jesus requires training. In the upcoming weeks we’ll give you the chance to sign up for this course, but for now just think about it, pray about it, and talk to your spouse and friends about joining all of us in it. If you know someone who isn’t a believer, they could join as well––to get a better sense of what following Jesus is actually about.
With you for Jesus,
Pastor Daren Redekopp
