…and invite our neighbours into his light.
I wonder—when you woke up this morning, did you feel as though you were about to enter a day and a life in which you could fulfill your dreams? Was there a sense of possibility, even adventure, in the hours that lay ahead? Or maybe as you think about those questions, you find yourself saying, “Dreams? I gave up on those a long time ago, somewhere around the same time that real life came along.”
There are times I think about all the myriad people scattered across the globe, and how very different each one’s dreams are from the others. For the man living by the volcano deep in South America, his daily dream is to collect enough of the toxic yellow sulphur from the smoking mountain, and then sell it to the mining company to be enabled to provide food for his family. For the boy growing up with his tribe on the frozen steppes of Asia, his dream is to train his eagle to catch a fox, and become recognized among his people as one of the hunters.
Our dreams are shaped by the contexts we’re born into, and thus look very different from the dreams of others around the world. And yet, there is one dream, one aspiration, that can freely be chased by any man or woman, any boy or girl, no matter where you live.
It is the dream of following God, of participating in the heart of the Almighty, of living your life for His incomparable Son. Scripture describes this dream in a thousand different ways—from Jesus’ words of farewell to his followers, “Go and make disciples of all the nations… and be sure of this: I am with you always,” (Matt. 28:19-20—to Paul’s encouragement in the resurrection chapter, “My dear brothers and sisters, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain.” (1 Cor. 15:58).
Here at Awaken, we have crystallized that dream into this single, ongoing vision:
To wake up to Jesus and invite our neighbours into his light.
So as this day and this new season begins, please, my Christian friends, let us live this dream together. Let us wake up to Jesus in the real-life grit of the days God gives us, and invite our neighbours into his light.
With you for Jesus,
Pastor Daren Redekopp
